International Day of Solidarity with the struggle of the Palestinian People
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 28th November 2014, Nicosia
The date 29th November is a landmark in the struggle of the Palestinian people for the recognition of Palestine as an independent and sovereign state. By decision of the UN General Assembly in 1977 the 29th of November was established as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people aiming at the international projection of the problem.
As AKEL we support politically the struggle of the Palestinian people for freedom, peace and justice. Today more than ever, an independent, viable and sovereign Palestinian state needs to be recognized alongside Israel, on the borders of 4th June 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Pressure must be put on Israel to force it to accept a final and comprehensive settlement through talks in line with this framework.
It is imperative that the international community must stop turning a blind eye to Israel’s destructive aggression against the Palestinian people and in violation of International humanitarian law.
On the occasion of 29th November, AKEL will seek in the coming period to have meetings with the delegations of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council in Cyprus to demand that pressure be exerted for the solution of the Palestinian problem.
