Social food banks and high unemployment do not consist a “new economic miracle”

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Press Office Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 19th May 2014, Nicosia

Cyprus-wants-troike-out1-300x225We regret to note that the President of the Republic during a speech in Limassol last night probably thought he was speaking at a pre-election rally for the 2013 presidential elections and not for the European elections in 2014.

Only this can explain the fact that almost one and a half years after taking office, Mr. Anastasiades is continuing to commit himself to closing down the
and reduce unemployment.

We want to remind the President of the Republic that within the framework of the “new economic miracle” Cyprus is experiencing, as he himself states, during his administration, social food banks have multiplied, unemployment is soaring and Cyprus has the highest figures in Europe, thousands of SME’s have put a padlock and are continuing to close down, wages and working people’s rights are being cut, as well as allowances and social benefits for vulnerable groups of the population.

These are the results of “rescue” policy of the Democratic Rally DISY party administration, which have emerged as a result of the disastrous decisions taken in March 2013, but also because of the neoliberal austerity policies which the government and ruling forces are imposing on the Cypriot people deliberately and regardless of the Memorandum.

Those responsible for the opening of the social food banks were none other than the bankers and the former Governor of the Central Bank Athanasios Orphanides, who DISY protected and continues to politically cover, despite the 19 billion Euro of losses that have now been proved were caused by their actions and omissions.
