Message of the GS of the CC AKEL on the Anniversary of the passing away of Hugo Chavez
On the occasion of the first anniversary since the passing away of the historical leader of Venezuela Hugo Chavez, AKEL expresses once again its solidarity with the people of Venezuela and its support OF the progressive course it has chosen to follow.
The name of Hugo Chavez is established as being synonymous with the Bolivarian Revolution, a progressive process which has been advancing over the last 15 years in Venezuela. This process constitutes a democratic, radical and progressive course that is based on the wholehearted, timeless support of the majority of the people of Venezuela.
Hugo Chavez charted an important path forward for his country, Latin America, but also for the whole world. He was one of the leaders who chose to prioritise the interests of his people and in particular, the interests of the popular and repressed strata, decisively and effectively combating its internal and external enemies whose class or geo-strategic interests were threatened. Furthermore, he chose to fight the capitalist relations governing the majority of contemporary states and to defy the domination of the multinational companies and imperialist centres that wanted to use his country as a colony or prey to their interests. Hugo Chavez preferred to promote the cooperation and deepening of relations between countries of Latin America, the majority of which were, and continue to be, the target of imperialist aggression.
This radical path of course encountered fierce obstacles so that it could survive until today. Coup d’états, subversion, sabotage, the questioning of transparent electoral results, funding of the opposition and armed conflict are just some of the methods the domestic ruling class used, with the support of the US, trying even to this day to reverse the progressive path of the country. The on-going developments in Venezuela are not unconnected to this reality, given that the extreme right-wing forces, with the backing of domestic bourgeois pro-American interests, are attempting to create conditions of social and political instability in the country, undermining the smooth functioning of the state and social services.
AKEL on the occasion of the anniversary of the passing away of Hugo Chavez declares that it will support the peoples waging struggles who are trying to chart a progressive path for their societies and humanity. The history of Hugo Chavez and those continuing the Bolivarian Revolution will inspire us in fulfilling this goal.
