AKEL ON THE NATIONAL COUNCIL´S SESSION ON THE ECONOMY

AKEL C.C Press Spokesperson Georgios Loucaides

Based on the positions of the political forces inside and outside the National Council on the Economy, AKEL believes that the reflection on the most appropriate under the current circumstances way to achieve the stabilisation and recovery of the Cyprus economy has not only not ended, but on the contrary in the period ahead it is expected to intensify.

The identification of several other political and social forces with the proposal submitted by AKEL for the speediest possible disengagement from the Memorandum, but also the loathsome but regretfully expected negative developments for the Cyprus economy, will bring AKEL´s proposal de facto back to the centre of public debate and interest.

Furthermore, we consider as strange and quite incomprehensible the approach arguing that the best way of disengaging from the disastrous consequences of the Memorandum is the faithful and blind implementation of the Troika’s clauses and orders, just as the Government and the DISY party are supporting.

Subsequently, AKEL not only will not withdraw its proposal, but will seek further consultation and dialogue with the political forces, but also with society itself and the people. We of course express at the same time our readiness to listen to their thoughts and reflections, since in no way do we consider our own proposal as sacred.

Therefore, we shall not do a favour to those who are calling on us silence ourselves, indeed in the name of democracy, by abandoning our proposal for disengagement from the Memorandum, which in our opinion can only be achieved in practice through the exit from the Eurozone.

The elementary respect for Democracy does not permit any attempt to silence any political force, even more so in these very decisive times for our country’s perspective and future when everyone, free from ideological compulsions, populist aphorisms and considerations must put the well-intentioned interests of our country above all else.

This is what AKEL does. We have not submitted a proposal that sounds nice and pleasing to the people, by promising that the day after its implementation the path will be strewn with rose petals.

On the contrary, we talked about a difficult choice; a choice however that will enable the recovery of the Cyprus economy as soon as possible and above all it will allow us to liberate ourselves from colonial dependencies and chains that may prove to be crucial with regards the management both of the Cyprus problem, as well as the infrastructures and revenue from the natural gas.
