Yet another monumental failure of N. Christodoulides’ governance

AKEL on the Akamas Sustainable Development Plan:

7 October 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The Audit Office’s new Special Report on the projects in Akamas highlights the errors and omissions of Nicos Christodoulides’ government in the planning and implementation of the Sustainable Development Plan for the Akamas National Forest Park. Characteristically the Audit Office intends to forward the report to the Attorney General to examine whether there are grounds for investigating possible criminal offences having been committed.

The government’s failure to protect Akamas is reflected in the absence of adequate preventive planning and controls, the failure to properly incorporate environmental conditions into the plans, deviations in construction works in several instances from the conditions/plans, and the retrospective handling of problems that caused environmental damage, delays and a waste of public resources.

All this confirms that the problem in Akamas was neither accidental nor an isolated incident. It stems from accumulated weaknesses in the planning, scrutiny and supervision of a project concerning one of Cyprus’s most important protected areas. The government not only owes answers to the Audit Office’s findings but must also ensure a full investigation into matters requiring further scrutiny and, above all, take the necessary corrective action to protect Akamas.

The Akamas region is the shared heritage of the whole of Cypriot society; it demands practical protection, the proper use of public funds, and projects that serve the environment and society.
