AKEL denounces hooded thugs attack on Nea Salamina club

Statement by the AKEL Central Committee’s Sports Bureau

We denounce in the strongest possible terms the cowardly attack by hooded thugs on volunteers from the Nea Salamina football club on Sunday evening, following the conclusion of Nea Salamina’s supporters’ Fun Day.

More specifically, around 40 hooded thugs attacked the Club’s volunteers, resulting in serious injuries and the need for them to be taken to hospital. We express our solidarity with the injured volunteers and supporters and wish them a speedy and full recovery.

This is not the first time that the police response has been inadequate, as, according to testimonies from local residents, they had been informed of the presence of troublemakers near the ‘FAMAGUSTA – RETRUN’ stadium. We call on the police not only to investigate the incidents immediately but this time to make the results of their investigation public, so that the incident is not recorded as yet another episode of violence with no one held to account.
