AKEL Bids Farewell to Sevgül Uludag

29 June 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

AKEL bids farewell with sadness and profound respect to Sevgül Uludag, a champion of peace in Cyprus and of reconciliation between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. Sevgül Uludag, a Turkish Cypriot activist and investigative journalist, dedicated her life and career to the humanitarian work of uncovering the fate of Cyprus’s missing persons, both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

Sevgül’s efforts have played a decisive role in determining the fate of many missing persons, both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. She stood out for her persistence in taking a humanitarian approach to the issue of the missing persons, as well as for her work toward healing the open wounds of the relatives and the two communities in general. In this work,

Sevgül neither backed down nor was she intimidated by the threats and hostility she faced from extremist chauvinist circles. At the same time, as an investigative journalist, she had a long-standing presence in both the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot press, collaborating with the newspapers “Yeni Düzen” and “Politis,” while she worked to bring to light the historical truth regarding all aspects of the Cypriot tragedy and the suffering endured by both communities.

Sevgül has been honored with a number of awards in Cyprus and internationally and was a nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize. In 2014, she was honored by the European Parliament with the “European Citizen” award, for which she had been nominated by AKEL MEPs.

Sevgül had a long-standing and close collaboration with AKEL and the Peoples Movement (Note: the mass organisations of the Left) on issues related to missing persons and the rapprochement between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, with her most recent initiative being the organization of the bicommunal art exhibition “From Pain to Hope,” organized by the Rapprochement Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL in collaboration with the bicommunal group of relatives of missing persons “Together We Can.”

AKEL will keep alive the memory of Sevgül and her contribution to the struggle for reconciliation and rapprochement between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, for the reunification and peace of our homeland.

AKEL extends its sincere condolences to Sevgül’s family, friends, and fellow activists.
