The major battles lie ahead of us

The procedure of electing the Speaker of the House of Representatives has confirmed that AKEL is the force in this country that marches forward and acts with honesty and integrity, far from any backroom deals and horse-trading—practices that so profoundly disappoint society. The candidacy of General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou was the candidacy of the Left, but at the same time, it represented the opposition and the entire progressive and democratic spectrum of the country. Above all, however, our choice and candidacy respond to society’s demand to put the brakes on the lobby of the banks and the powerful economic interests that dictate the country’s political life.

AKEL, with its head held high, continues to address society with credibility and clarity because major battles lie ahead of us. AKEL expresses its appreciation to ALMA party for its support of St. Stefanou’s candidacy.

On the other hand, the wheeling and dealing and the choices certain party leaderships have made are exposing them irreparably. The leadership of DIKO continued its shift to the right by electing DISY to the Presidency of the House of Representatives. Direct Democracy revealed its true colours right from the very beginning by supporting, indeed as early as the first round, the leading party of the system and the banks. Far-right ELAM, meanwhile, hid behind its abstention, after of course having repeatedly making it clear that its problem was with the DISY candidate and not with DISY and its policies.

AKEL congratulates Anita Demetriou on her re-election as Speaker of the House and declares that it will continue to act in the House of Representatives with seriousness, a democratic spirit, and above all, a commitment to serve our people’s interests and needs.
