The Central Committee of AKEL unanimously endorses the candidacy of Stefanos Stefanou for the Presidency of the House of Representatives

The Plenary Session of the Central Committee of AKEL met today and discussed the election of the new Speaker of the House of Representatives. The Central Committee was briefed on the actions and contacts that have been made by the Party leadership, as well as on the deliberations of the matter that developed at the level of the the Political Bureau, and approved the handlings made to date. The Central Committee reaffirmed that, as a matter of principle, AKEL does not engage in any dialogue or contact whatsoever with the far right, and that, in practice, there cannot be any cooperation with Democratic Rally party DISY.
Following a thorough and productive discussion, the Central Committee unanimously endorsed the candidacy of the General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, who possesses the political and parliamentary experience, the seriousness, and the democratic and rational spirit required for the position of Speaker of the House. Furthermore, the candidacy of Stefanos Stefanou is the one that has already won the support of two parliamentary parties, AKEL-Left-Social Alliance and ALMA party.
The Central Committee of AKEL instructs the Political Bureau to continue its contacts and consultations with the other political parties by submitting the candidacy of Stefanos Stefanou and exploring possibilities for broadening support for it.
Furthermore, the Central Committee authorizes the Political Bureau to evaluate the given situation that will be presented and to take the final decisions concerning the position of the AKEL-Left-Social Alliance will adopt in the vote in the House of Representatives.
The Central Committee of the Party assures all the people of the Left and the progressive people of the country, as well as the Cypriot people as a whole, that AKEL will resolutely continue with the new strength and momentum given to it by the electoral success of May 24 to struggle and win for society. To stand as the beacon of democracy and progress in the country and, at the same time, to build a majority to realise progressive change in 2028.
