AKEL denounces the barbarism and mass crimes being committed by Israel in Lebanon
31 May 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
Alongside the genocide in Gaza, Israel is escalating its brutal attack on Lebanon by expanding its ground invasion and the bombing of residential areas, while simultaneously issuing ultimatums to the Lebanese people to abandon their land. During the ceasefire, over 600 people were killed and over 1,700 were wounded. Israeli brutality spares not even children. In just seven days, 77 children were killed or wounded, while since the start of the ceasefire in mid-April, 55 children have been killed and another 212 wounded. At the same time, refugees number in the tens of thousands, while the Israeli offensive is destroying and threatening World Heritage sites.
The mass war crimes being committed by Netanyahu’s Israeli regime as part of its expansionist-colonial strategy continue because it has the backing of the US and the EU leadership. The destruction and barbarism sown by the Israeli killing machine can only be stopped if it faces international and decisive pressure and isolation, with the imposition of strict sanctions and an arms embargo.
AKEL once again calls on the Christodoulides government to explicitly denounce Israeli brutality against Lebanon and to align itself with those in Europe and the international community demanding that measures be taken against Israel. AKEL has stood and will continue to stand in solidarity with the people of Lebanon, with whom Cyprus is, after all, bound by ties of friendship.
