AKEL is always with the people and always struggles for the benefit of society
Statement by the General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou
17 May 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
This tour here in the Municipaity of Geroskipou is part of the ongoing tours and visits AKEL organises to Municipalities, villages, and workplaces in general, and it is of course also linked to the final stretch of the election campaign its election time.
Since 2021, on the initiative of the Party’s new leadership, we have continued AKEL’s long-standing position of constant engagement and contacts with the people, and we are implementing this decision with even greater consistency and frequency.
It is extremely important to have this continuous, close relationship with the people and to listen to people’s views, to understand what is really happening in society.
That is precisely why we have worked both inside and outside Parliament to address expensiveness and the high cost of living—all the issues that daily pressure, stress, and torment a large section of society.
We worked in the previous Parliament, doing everything within our power and within Parliament’s constitutional framework to address the high cost of living, to help people increase their incomes and better cope with this situation, to pressure both the previous and current governments to adopt and implement policies that benefit society.
We shall continue to do so in the new Parliament as well. We will continue to work for society, with society, so that we can improve people’s conditions in our country. This is why it is so very important that AKEL remains strong in the new Parliament.
And it will be strong in the new Parliament. We see this recorded in the opinion polls, but even more so in our contacts with the people. More and more people are coming forward, expressing their optimism that through hard work—which we will continue right up until election day— we will achieve the electoral goal we have set, and we will always roll up our sleeves and continue working from the day after the election, fighting for society together with society.
