DISY and DIKO have gone into hiding for four days now

The collaboration with far-right ELAM that DISY and DIKO are preparing is dangerous for democracy, our country and people

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas

13 May 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

Today marks the 4th day that DISY and DIKO have been hiding from the public. In their interviews in “Kathimerini” newspaper on Sunday, these two parties have opened the door to forging an official cooperation with far-right ELAM regarding the post of Speaker of the House of Representatives, but evidently also with regards the Presidency of the Republic As regards ELAM, through its leader’s interview on RIK, it has confirmed that the possibility of once again supporting DISY remains open.

The situation is quite clear. Having relied on the votes of the far-right ELAM to elect Anastasiades to the Presidency, to elect DISY President Annita Dimitriou to the post of Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Christodoulides as President, and having whitewashed the far right for years, DISY and DIKO are now moving to the next stage and preparing the ground for an open collaboration with ELAM. To continue clinging to power, so they can pass the legislation dictated to them by the banks and big business, DISY and DIKO are embracing ELAM, which up until yesterday both had characterized as neo-Nazi.

AKEL is sending out a message in every direction. Namely, that what DISY and DIKO are preparing is dangerous for democracy, the country and our people. The far right has committed crimes in this country; the far right is poisoning society every day. Its should be in isolation, not in seats of power. May 24 is the critical moment. AKEL—the Left Social Alliance—is the powerful force that can thwart this plan.
