The government’s pandering to Trump neither honors the country and its dignity, nor will it yield the results it imagines

The Foreign Minister’s statements of admiration for Donald Trump are shameful and politically problematic. Speaking to an American news network, Foreign Minister Kompos praised Trump for being in a unique position to redefine the world order, extolled his “decisive” approach to international relations, and invited him with open arms, as he characteristically stated, to Cyprus. Apparently, Mr. Kompos and the government are not bothered or concerned by the inflammatory and illegal actions of the US President on the world stage, nor even by his contempt for Europe.

The whole world can see that the Trump administration is openly undermining the United Nations, demolishing the fundamental principles of international law, invading and attacking sovereign states, collaborating in the ongoing genocide in Palestine, undermining the territorial integrity of European states, launching trade wars on European societies, whilst never missing an opportunity to praise Erdogan.

Nonetheless, the Christodoulides government insists on tying our country—to the point of subservience—to the US and the Trump administration, ignoring the consequences that the complete disregard for international law will have for Cyprus and its struggle. It is characteristic that the sensitivities expressed by the government regarding international law in relation to the war in Ukraine have disappear when they have to do with the US and Israel.

AKEL recalls that the most effective weapon of the Republic of Cyprus, and the one that has shielded its existence for so many years, is international law and the Resolutions of the UN, as well as Cyprus’ credibility in relation to them. We would like to point out to the government and the Minister of Foreign Affairs that sucking up to Trump neither honors the country and its dignity, nor will it yield the results they imagine.
