The government must realise the dangers and consequences from military-political cooperation with Israel

President Christodoulides is proceeding with the deepening military-political cooperation with Israel without realising the dangers and consequences of this policy choice. AKEL calls on the government to inform the political forces and the people about the content of the recent meetings and agreements.

At the same time, AKEL points out two things:

Firstly, if this policy is based on the government’s impression that Israel and the Netanyahu regime will protect Cyprus against Turkey’s aggression, then this represents a dangerous illusion. The experience of previous years demonstrates that the Israeli state has no such intentions and that the much-publicized trilateral arrangements (Greece/Israel/Cyprus) did not shield Cyprus from Turkish aggressive actions against it.

Second. As long as the Cypriot government chooses to turn a blind eye and cover up the Israeli state’s ongoing mass violations of international law — genocide, occupation, colonization — it undermines its own credibility in the struggle to put an end to Turkey’s occupation of our homeland. The recent refusal of the Christodoulides government to join forces with 14 countries —including Britain, France, Germany, Spain, and Canada — which called on Israel to end the expansion of settlements in the West Bank — is a contradiction in itself for a country that itself suffers from the crime of colonization.
