AKEL denounces the planned prohibition of the Communist Party of Poland

12 December 2025, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

AKEL condemns the planned prohibition of the Communist Party of Poland, which constitutes a new episode in the anti-communist witch hunt and a further undermining of democratic freedoms in the EU. The Communist Party of Poland, which has been facing various types of persecution for many years, is now facing proceedings initiated at the request of the country’s far-right president to the Constitutional Court, which has called for the Communist Party of Poland to be removed from the register of political parties.

Moden anti-communism, which has assumed institutional characteristics from the EU and a number of member states is based on a crude distortion of world history and on ideological concepts whose real aim is to criminalize not only communist activity, but any radical movement and voice that stands up for working people’s rights, against wars, genocide, and militarization. It is clear that Trump’s election in the US, who also engages in systematic anti-communist propaganda reminiscent of McCarthyism, fuels similar campaigns in Europe.

AKEL stands in solidarity with the Communist Party of Poland and the communists of that country. At the same time, it will raise the issue of its persecution at an international and European level as a violation of freedom of thought and conscience and a violation of democratic freedoms.
