AKEL denounces US aggression against Venezuela and its people

AKEL denounces the unprovoked and intensifying aggression of the US and the Trump administration against Venezuela and its people. The naval encirclement of Venezuela by US military forces and the closure of the country’s airspace constitute a flagrant violation of international law, the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as international rules of navigation and aviation.

Venezuela is being targeted by the US because it is the country with the largest oil reserves in the world. The demand for the overthrow of Venezuela’s elected president is part of US plans to take control of the country’s energy and mineral wealth, as well as the wealth of all the countries of the Caribbean and Latin and Central America, a region that the US continues to regard and treat as its “backyard.”

These plans are being promoted under the pretext of combating drug trafficking, on the basis of which they have committed more than 80 extrajudicial killings at sea, an action that also constitutes a violation of the UN Charter and human rights.

Developments confirm that the US aggression against everyone on the planet is escalating in order to defend its global hegemony that is being challenged. The defence of peace, international law, and solidarity with the peoples subjected to this aggression is a duty in order to maintain the security and coexistence of the states and peoples of the world.

AKEL expresses its solidarity with the people of Venezuela and all the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean who have vivid memories of the bloody interventions and dictatorships caused and instigated by the US.
