Bizonal, Bicommunal Federation and the assumption of initiatives by Christodoulides are the only way forward

AKEL’s four-point proposal for a solution

We must bear in mind that Tufan Erhürman is sincere when he talks about Bizonal, Bicommunal Federation, AKEL’s Central Organisational Secretary Haris Karamanos pointed out to ASTRA radio, when asked to comment on yesterday’s statements by the new leader of the Turkish Cypriot community in Ankara.
H.Karamanos stressed that the Cyprus problem is at a critical juncture after eight years of stagnation and deadlock and that it is necessary and imperative that initiatives are taken to create momentum.
At the same time, he said that it is of utmost importance to resume the talks, and that AKEL has submitted four proposals to this end.
First, H.Karamanos said, we must remain consistent to the agreed solution of a Bizonal, Bicommunal Federation with political equality.
Secondly, negotiations must resume from the point at which they were interrupted at Crans-Montana, without setting terms or preconditions, and on the basis of the safeguarding all the convergences that have been recorded so far and negotiating the outstanding issues within the Guterres Framework.
Thirdly, the formulation of a strong, positive agenda that includes incentives for Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot community for them to return to the negotiating table, and it is well known that AKEL has formulated a specific proposal on energy issues since 2020.
Fourth, H.Karamanos said, AKEL has proposed the promotion of unilateral Confidence Building Measures for the benefit of the Turkish Cypriot community.
It is important, Haris Karamanos stressed, that right now when there is some movement on the Cyprus problem, for President Christodoulides to take the initiative and move in this direction.
