AKEL on the anniversary of the declaration of the pseudo-state

14 November 2025, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The 42nd anniversary of the declaration of the pseudo-state in the occupied territories of Cyprus reminds us of Turkey’s ongoing flagrant violation of international law and the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus, which has been unanimously denounced by the international community through UN Resolutions.

The declaration of the pseudo-state was the third part of the partitionist crime committed against Cyprus. It was preceded, in the summer of 1974, by the fascist coup d’état executed by the Greek junta and EOKA B against the lawful government of the country, and by Turkey’s barbaric invasion and ongoing occupation of half of Cyprus. The declaration of the pseudo-state was the culmination of the partitionist plans against Cyprus, plans that were masterminded by NATO centres, but eagerly carried out by the chauvinists in both communities.

From the moment the illegal regime was declared, AKEL called on the people to struggle united against Ankara’s machinations and plans to partition our island, in order to defend the Republic of Cyprus and international law.

On the anniversary of the declaration of the pseudo-state, AKEL declares that it will continue to work with all its might to end the occupation and reunite our homeland and people. It will continue to extend a hand of cooperation and convey a message of rallying forces to all the progressive forces in the Turkish Cypriot community against the colonization and policies for the assimilation of the Turkish Cypriot community and the annexation of the occupied territories by Ankara.

The latest developments raise expectations for a new momentum in the efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem, which have been at an impasse for several years. Given the expressed readiness of the UN Secretary-General for a new effort on the substance of the Cyprus problem, AKEL stresses that everyone must focus on the goal of resuming substantive negotiations for a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, as described in the UN Resolutions. This can be achieved by continuing the talks from where they were interrupted in 2017 at Crans-Montana, with all the convergences recorded secured and negotiations on the basis of the Guterres Framework for the remaining issues.

This is the path that can lead to the liberation and reunification of our homeland and people, to a free, independent, and united Cyprus, a common homeland for Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians, and Latins.

On the occasion of the anniversary of the declaration of the pseudo-state, AKEL is organizing an anti-occupation event today, Friday, November 14, 2025, at 7:00 p.m., with the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, St. Stefanou, as the keynotespeaker. The event will be preceded by an anti-occupation march, which will start at 6:15 p.m. from the Famagusta Gate Moat.
