The AKEL District Electoral Conference in Larnaca affirmed the profoundly democratic nature of AKEL’s internal party procedures, announcing the start of the formation of the electoral lists for the upcoming Parliamentary Elections.
The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, set as a primary goal the strengthening of the Party, stressing that Cyprus is at a pivotal and critical juncture. S.Stefanou briefly referred to the serious issues that need to be addressed: the Cyprus problem, social and economic inequalities, the issue of energy, and the water problem.
The General Secretary of AKEL focused on the growing inequalities, underlining that Cyprus is one of the leading countries in this regard. “The wealth produced ends up in fewer and fewer hands, with the result that workers and the middle strata are left with crumbs,” St. Stefanou pointed out, adding that the increase in inequalities, together with the skyrocketing cost of living and housing, which is inflated due to the mass sale of real estate to third-country nationals, are creating an “explosive mixture.”
The AKEL Larnaca District Secretary, Chrystalla Antoniou, stressed the need to strengthen the voice of the Left in the struggle for social justice and progress, expressing her conviction that Larnaca, the city of struggles and hope, will resolutely uphold AKEL’s principles “For the People with the People.”
In conclusion, the General Secretary of AKEL expressed his optimism, stating his certainty that AKEL, just before the celebrations to be organised for its 100th anniversary, would wage the parliamentary elections even more united and wit its forces rallied, seeking to open up the prospect of bringing change for the Cypriot people, who “for almost 13 years have been suffering from the imposition of right-wing policies.”
