Statements by Stefanos Stefanou, General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL on a tour of the mountainous region of Nicosia
16 October 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
We continue today the tour we are conducting throughout Cyprus. Through these tours, we have the possibility and opportunity to get in touch with ordinary people, to listen to their worries, concerns and problems.
What is currently at the top of the list of people’s problems is the issue of price hikes and rising prices of essential goods. It is clear that measures need to be taken to provide relief to society, households and to businesses.
Measures do exist. The government could adopt the decisions approved by the overwhelming majority of parliament – decisions that came as a result of AKEL’s initiatives, to reduce the price of electricity and fuel. Unfortunately, the government didn’t do so, continuing its policy of indifference to the problems faced by households and businesses.
In its 10 years of government, the DISY government has convinced us of its social callousness. We do not expect the government to adopt these decisions now, nor do we expect it to change its policies towards society. What needs to change is the government itself, which must go. Those who declare themselves to be the continuators of this government with its social insensitive policies shouldn’t take its place at the helm of the state, whether it is Averof Neophytou or Nikos Christodoulides, who are two sides of the same coin.
Real change in the country can be realised with Andreas Mavroyiannis, who, among other things, can bring sensitivity to the governance in tackling problems, sensitivity with regards the common people, households and small and medium-sized enterprises. Andreas Mavroyiannis will put forward policies that will give the economy sustainability and at the same time distribute the wealth produced in the fairest way. Most important of all, policies will be pursued that provide support the people, society and the economy.
