An AKEL delegation headed by the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, held a meeting with the President of the Republic today at the request of the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL to discuss the serious energy security issues Cyprus is facing.
The AKEL delegation also included Neoklis Sylikiotis, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of AKEL, Christina Nikolaou, Head of AKEL’s Energy and Environment Policy and Giorgos Siammas, Head of the Energy Bureau of AKEL.
The General Secretary of AKEL made the following statements:
“We requested the meeting to discuss with the President of the Republic issues concerning the country’s energy security. In addition, we discussed issues concerning the Cyprus Electricity Authority (AHK), which plays a key role in energy issues.
We raised a number of issues and the necessary answers were given. We agreed that we will continue to engage in a dialogue.
At the meeting we submitted specific proposals aimed at reducing the price of electricity which is very high due first of all to the long delay in the arrival of Natural Gas for power generation purposes. Cyprus is paying many, many millions of euros in pollutants, and this is passed on to the cost of electricity paid by every household and business.
We strongly requested that the state proceed with lowest price tendering, as a number of other European countries have done, such as Greece, Germany and Portugal, with great success, which has had a reflection on the price of electricity produced from renewable energy sources.
We also tabled a specific proposal for the fee that exists in the electricity bills for renewable energy to be abolished, which is half a cent per kilowatt hour. The amount can be financed from the revenue generated by the auctioning of pollutants.”
