Public hospitals again left unprepared for the 4th wave
Statement by AKEL C.C. Press Spokesperson and AKEL MP Giorgos Koukoumas
19th July 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The country is facing the fourth wave of the pandemic, a year and a half after its initial outbreak. However, public hospitals are again unprepared to deal with the situation that has arisen. It is incomprehensible for patients with coronavirus to be waiting to be admitted to hospital at the same time as serious difficulties are being noted in dealing with both emergency cases and chronic patients.
It is clear that the state health services OKYPY has not fulfilled its responsibility and its operational plan is clearly not working. Nor is the competent Ministry, as the political head of OKYPY and the body that should have been more substantially involved in the response to the pandemic, without blame.
AKEL appeals for the umpteenth time to the government and the Ministry of Health to focus decisively and swiftly on strengthening public hospitals to deal with the new wave of the pandemic.
