AKEL on the new revelations about the murder of Turkish Cypriot journalist Kutlu Adali

25th May 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The recent revelations about the murder of Turkish Cypriot journalist Kutlu Adalı in 1996 are very worrying. They highlight once again the longstanding unacceptable methods of silencing opposition voices within the Turkish Cypriot community by Turkey.

Adali, who was a journalist for Turkish Cypriot newspaper “Yeni Duzen”, was highly critical of the various activities and actions of the Turkish army and political figures in the occupied territories. These were the reasons that annoyed the Turkish establishment at the time, which, as it now seems clearer, bears the responsibility for the murder of the journalist.

More specifically, according to the revelations made these days by Sedat Peker, a key figure in the Turkish mafia, the reasons for the murder appear to be related to the then Minister of Interior and Chief of Police of Turkey.

AKEL stands in solidarity with all Turkish Cypriots who are seeking justice in the case and are struggling for freedom of expression and democracy.
