AKEL on the International Youth Day

On the occasion of International Youth Day, AKEL sends a warm greeting to all the young people of our country, Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins, to all the young people living and working in Cyprus. To the young workers and the self-employed, to the new generation of science, arts and sports, to students and pupils, to the young people who are active in the movements for ecology, human rights and social solidarity.
Today’s young generation is the first generation after decades to be forced to live in worse conditions than their parents and grandparents. Youth unemployment, job insecurity, the commercialization of education, unbearable high rents and loan installments are just some of what a large section of young people face on a daily basis – indeed at the same time as corruption in Cyprus has reached unprecedented levels, causing justified disappointment among our young people.
The young generation needs, deserves and demands a better Cyprus.
- A Cyprus with a new developmental model that produces prosperity for the many and not for the privileged few; that creates and maintains permanent, full and dignified jobs, with guaranteed modern labour rights, with social policies and structures that support maternity and fatherhood, with state policies for affordable housing for young couples, quality public and free education, and a strong public health system.
- A Cyprus of democracy, progress and solidarity that will combat racism, chauvinism, sexism and homophobia; that will effectively face the great challenges of our time such as gender equality, the complete separation of Church and State, environmental policy, a democratic humanitarian education system, culture and new technologies.
- A free, reunited and peaceful Cyprus that guarantees a future of security for the future generations, leaving the occupation, division, militarization and tensions in the past.
AKEL knows that the Left fulfills its mission when it meets the concerns, expectations and demands of young people. When it listens, talks and learns from young people. When it inspires and is inspired by youth. When it meets its visions for today and tomorrow. AKEL promises to continue on this path. Together with EDON, the biggest mass and active youth organization in our country. Together with the young people of Cyprus, who we want to be fighters and protagonists for today and the future.
