Attorney General’s resignation a response to the government’s dishonest attempt to defame him
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 26th June 2020, Nicosia
The resignation of the Attorney General Mr. Costas Clerides is the response to the dishonest attempt of the government ruling forces to defame him the public eye.
Even now that Mr. Costas Clerides is stepping down, the Anastasiades government is demonstrating that it has evidently never forgiven him for the deafening “Shame on you” he addressed to Mr. Anastasiades himself. It was back then when the President of the Republic and his government humiliated every notion of respect for institutions, in their attempt to save the former deputy Attorney General Rikkos Erotokritou (who was on trial).
All these are cases of a systematic problematic behaviour by the Anastasiades-DISY government that clashed with numerous independent officials of the country, including the Attorney General.
The government’s style and ethos in power are reflected in the doctrine: “whoever can’t be under control is destroyed and humiliated”, even if the President is trying to save the pretexts by stating today that the issue has taken on unnecessary dimensions. It is the government that has given these dimensions and is fully responsible for them.
