Instead of xenophobic populism the Interior Minister should provide solutions on the refugee issue
AKEL on today’s statements by the Minister of Interior
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 26 May 2020, Nicosia
In relation to the statements made today by the Minister of Interior Mr. Nouris, we point out the following:
- The right to demonstrate is an inalienable and constitutionally guaranteed democratic right.
- People hosted in reception and gathering areas asserting dignified living conditions for them and their families does not mean that they do not respect our country. The Minister of the Interior should reflect on why the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Cyprus has made similar recommendations to our country.
- It would be more useful if the government and particularly the Minister of Interior, instead of engaging in xenophobic populism to cover up the government’s failures, is working to provide solutions to the refugee issue based on our state’s obligations as a member of the UN and the EU. He should working to ensure that asylum applications are processed in a timely manner, as well as to provide answers about the prevailing in the area of Pournaras in Kokkinotrimithia.
