Average citizen’s daily reality dispels government’s rejoicing

Written statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 12th February 2016, Nicosia

The growth rate is inflated by the effect of the negative inflation rate. In reality, the increase in the production of services and goods is next to nothing.

It is no coincidence that the average citizen is not living through “the highest growth rate over the last seven years”. The day-to-day life experience of Cypriot citizens is becoming every day more difficult and insecure. There is of course a small section of the population who has increased their incomes and profits enormously. However, they are a privileged minority and they are usually the ones who already have high incomes.

Instead of rejoicing the Finance Minister and the Government about a statistic which does not describe the reality of the average citizen, it would be better if they were to reflect on the huge growth in income and economic inequality in Cyprus.
